RE: To Call Hanoi Authorities To Release Pro-Democracy Activists
Vietnam – April 30, 2008. At this very moment, there have been numerous arrests, harassments and intimidations across the country of Viet Nam due to the Beijing Olympic 2008 Torch Relay. Vietnamese pro-democracy activists have been suppressed and arrested for the peaceful expression of their political views.
The Hanoi government continues to suppress the innocent people violently. Many dissidents, students, fishermen and farmers who directly protested the Olympic Beijing 2008 on April 29, 2008 in Ha Noi were brutal beaten and detained. Writer Nguyen Xuan Nghia, Teacher Vu Hung, Nguyen Tien Nam and many others were violently beaten and injured by Hanoi police. Some were released including former communist member Mr. Vi Duc Hoi, Teacher Vu Hung, Ms. Le Thi Kim Thu, Nguyen Tien Nam but others remaining in jail still. Writer Nguyen Xuan Nghia, Mr. Vu Anh Son are currently being detained at Police detention center in Kien An District, Hai Phong Province. Ms. Ngo Quynh and Mr. Nhat are being held at Bac Giang Province.
In addition of deportation Mr. Vuong Hoang Minh back to the United States due to his T-shirt's slogan “Protest China occupied of Spartly and Paracel Islands”, arrested and pressed charge on Mr. Nguyen Hoang Hai, also known as Blogger Dieu Cay for his publicly support the torch relay protest. Mr. Le Trung Thanh, an University student who is studying in Taipei but participated in a Torch Relay protest in Bangkok, Thailand on April 19 was also constantly intimidated. His elderly father and mother in Vietnam were interrogated, house was under 24hrs surveillance.
- We call on Vietnam 's government to release Writer Nguyen Xuan Nghia and Mr. Vu Anh Son immediately.
- We call on Vietnam ’s government to release Mr. Nguyen Hoang Hai, also known as Blogger Dieu Cay immediately.
- We call on the Vietnam ’s government to stop using force violently to attack pro-democracy activists.
- We call on Vietnam's government to respect human rights, to accept open and direct dialogue with other opposing political groups; to end all baseless allegations and arbitrary detention of pro-democracy activists solely for having publicly supported democracy.
The People's Democratic Party strongly protests and condemns the Vietnamese authorities for their recent oppression practices. We urgently ask that they release these pro-democracy activists immediately.
