Declaration by the Presidency on behalf of the EU on the sentencing of human rights defenders in Viet Nam

The EU has noted with great concern that several peaceful human rights defenders have been arrested and given long prison sentences on charges of "conducting propaganda against the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam". On 30 March, Father Nguyen Van Ly, Nguyen Phong and Nguyen Binh Thanh were sentenced to 8, 6 and 5 years’ imprisonment respectively by the People's Court of Thua Thien Hue Province. On 10 May, Nguyen Bac Truyen, Huynh Nguyen Dao and Le Nguyen Sang were sentenced to 3, 4 and 5 years’ imprisonment respectively by the People's Court of Ho Chi Minh City. On 11 May the People's Court of Hanoi sentenced lawyers Nguyen Van Dai to 5 years’ imprisonment plus 4 years’ "administrative probation" (house arrest) and Le Thi Cong Nhan to 4 years’ imprisonment plus 3 years’ “adminsitrative probation”. On 15 May, Tran Quoc Hien was sentenced to 5 years imprisonment and 2 years “administrative probation” by the People’s Court of Ho Chi Minh City.

The EU reiterates its plea to the Government of Viet Nam to release all non-violent political activists who have simply exercised their rights to freedom of expression and association as guaranteed in article 69 of the Vietnamese Constitution and in articles 19 and 22 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, to which Viet Nam is a party.

The EU will continue its ongoing dialogue process with Viet Nam, of which the established EU-Viet Nam Human Rights Dialogue is an integral part.

The Candidate Countries Turkey, Croatia* and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia*, the Countries of the Stabilisation and Association Process and potential candidates Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia, and the EFTA countries Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, members of the European Economic Area, as well as Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova align themselves with this declaration.

* Croatia and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia continue to be part of the Stabilisation and Association Process.

Bản tuyên bố của Liên Hiệp Âu Châu về việc các nhà bảo vệ nhân quyền tại Việt Nam bị kết án.

Liên Hiệp Âu châu đặc biệt quan ngại về việc một số nhà bảo vệ nhân quyền theo đường lối ôn hòa đã bị bắt giữ và bị kết án nặng nề về tội “tuyên truyền chống phá nhà nước cộng hòa xã hội chủ nghĩa Việt Nam”.

Vào ngày 30 tháng 3, linh mục Nguyễn Văn Lý, Ông Nguyễn Phong và Nguyễn Bình Thành đã bị kết án 8, 6 và 5 năm tù bởi tòa án nhân dân Thừa Thiên – Huế. Vào ngày 10 tháng 5, Nguyễn Bắc Truyễn, Huỳnh Nguyên Đạo và Lê Nguyên Sang đã bị kết án 3, 4 và 5 năm tù bởi tòa án nhân dân Sài Gòn. Vào ngày 11 tháng 5, tòa án nhân dân Hà Nội đã kết án hai luật sư Nguyễn Văn Đài 5 năm tù cộng thêm 4 năm quản chế, và Lê Thị Công Nhân 4 năm tù cộng 3 năm quản chế. Vào ngày 15 tháng 5, tòa án nhân dân Sài Gòn đã kết án Trần Quốc Hiền 5 năm tù cộng 2 năm quản chế.

Liên Hiệp Âu Châu tái khẳng định sự yêu cầu nhà cầm quyền Việt Nam phải phóng thích tất cả các nhà đấu tranh bằng hình thức ôn hòa, họ chỉ thực hiện quyền tự do ngôn luận và quyền tự do lập hội đã được bảo đảm bởi điều 69 của Hiến pháp Việt Nam và điều 19 và 22 của Hiệp ước quốc tế về quyền lợi xã hội và chính trị mà Việt Nam là một thành viên.

Liên Hiệp Âu Châu sẽ tiếp tục các vòng đàm phán với Việt Nam mà trong đó cuộc đối thoại về nhân quyền đã được chính thức hóa.
