Vào ngày Thư Hai, 27 tháng 6, năm 2005, hội "Ký Giả Không Biên Giới Canada" (Reporters Without Border Canada) đã thúc đẩy TT Paul Martin đưa ra vấn đề tù nhân lương tâm Pham Hồng Sơn khi gặp TT Phan Văn Khai.
Tội trạng duy nhất của một nhân viên trẻ thuộc ban quản trị của công ty dược phẩm này là đã đưa lên Internet bản dịch ra Việt ngữ của một bài nói về dân chủ trên trang nhà của Toà Đại Sứ Mỹ tại Hà Nội.
Nhân dịp có cuộc viếng thăm lịch sử này, Hội Ký Giả Không Biên Giới đã khẩn thiết kêu gọi Thủ Tướng Canada lấy tính cách cá nhân can thiệp với Phan Văn Khải sớm trả lại tự do cho chiến sĩ đấu tranh dân chủ Phạm Hồng Sơn. Thủ Tướng Việt Nam đến Canada vào ngày Thứ Bảy trong lịch trình 6 ngày thăm viếng. Đây là cuộc viếng thăm đầu tiên của một nhân vật đứng đầu nhà nước CSVN kể từ khi có sự thiết lập bang giao giửa hai nước vào năm 1973.
Hội Ký Giả Không Biên Giới nói rằng: "Nhà nước CSVN đã chứng tỏ có thiện ý bằng cách gần đây đã thả một số tù nhân lương tâm . Hội này tiếp: "Và đây là một cơ hội tốt để quý quốc nhắc nhở đến tình trạng của tù nhân lương tâm này. Ngoài Phạm Hồng Sơn, còn có hai nhân vật phản kháng qua Internet là Nguyễn Khắc Toàn và Nguyễn Vũ Bình."
Bác sĩ Phạm Hồng Sơn đã bị kêu án 13 năm tù vì tội làm "gián điệp." Phạm Hồng Sơn làm đơn chống án ngày 26 tháng 8, năm 2003, toà án cao cấp buộc lòng phải giảm án xuống còn 5 năm tù. Kể từ khi ông Sơn bị bắt, vợ ông chỉ được phép đến thăm chồng một lần duy nhất.

Prime Minister, Paul Martin urged to raise case of prisoner of opinion
with Vietnam's Prime Minister
MONTREAL, June 27 /CNW Telbec/ - On Monday, June 27th, 2005 Reporters Without Borders Canada calls upon Prime Minister Paul Martin to raise the case of Vietnamese prisoner of opinion Pham Hong Son at his meeting with Vietnam's Prime Minister Phan Van Khai.
The sole crime committed by this young pharmaceutical company executive is to have posted online a Vietnamese translation of an article on democracy produced by the US embassy in Hanoi.
On the occasion of this historic visit, the organisation calls upon the Canadian Prime Minister to intervene personally with Phan Van Khai to obtain an early release for the cyberdissident. The vietnamese Prime Minister arrived in Canada on Saturday for a six days visit. This is the first official visit by a vietnamese head of governement since the establishment of diplomatic ties between Canada and Vietnam in 1973.
"The government has shown some evidence of goodwill with the recent release of several prisoners of opinion," said Reporters Without Borders. "It could now be opportune for your country to remind Phan Van Khai about the plight of this prisoner of opinion. Apart from Pham Hong Son, two other cyberdissidents remain in prison. They are Nguyen Khac Toan and Nguyen Vu Binh."
Dr Pham Hong Son was sentenced to five years in prison on appeal on August 26th, 2003, reduced from 13 years imposed for "espionage" by a lower court. Since his arrest he has only been able to receive one visit from his wife.
