Tướng Westmoreland luôn luôn khẳng định rằng Hoa Kỳ không thua trận ở Việt Nam: "Một cách chính xác hơn, Hoa Kỳ đã không giữ đúng lời cam kết với Miền Nam Việt Nam."

 

Tướng William Westmoreland, một trong các tướng lãnh Mỹ được nhiều huy chương nhất và cũng là một vị tướng gây nhiều tranh luận nhất, đã qua đời. Ông hưởng thọ được 91 tuổi.

 

Tướng hồi hưu Westmoreland là một chỉ huy trưởng ưu tú của quân đội Mỹ, từ tiểu đội lên đến tham mưu trưởng. Ông xuất thân từ West Point năm 1936, vào thời điểm bắt đầu của chiến tranh thế giới thư hai. Ông đã từng chỉ huy tiểu đoàn ở Sicily và Bắc Phi (North Africa) trong thế chiến thứ hai.

 

Tuy nhiên, phải đợi đến hơn 20 năm sau khi chiến tranh thế giới thư hai chấm dứt ở Âu Châu, vai trò của ông mới nổi bật. Năm 1964, ông đã là tướng 3 sao tư lệnh quân đội Mỹ tại Việt Nam. Chiến tranh Việt Nam là một cuộc chiến dài nhất và gây chia rẽ nhiều nhất mà đất nước Hoa Kỳ chưa từng trải qua.

 

Sau đó ông được vinh thăng chức Tham Mưu Trưởng quân đội, và ở chức vụ này cho đến khi ông về hưu vào năm 1972.

Năm 1965, tuần báo Time chọn ông là "Man of the Year."

 

Mặc dù có nhiều dèm pha, tướng Westmoreland là người dẫn đầu đoàn diễn hành để vinh danh các cựu chiến binh Việt Nam tại Washington vào năm 1982, ông nói đây là một niềm hãnh diện lớn nhất chưa từng có  trong đời binh nghiệp của ông.

 

Năm 1982, trong chương trình 60 phút, CBS tố cáo Westmoreland là cố ý đánh giá thấp sức mạnh của quân đội  cộng sản Bắc Việt. Tướng Westmoreland thưa CBS về tội phỉ báng (libel), sau 18 tuần xử án được đăng tin sôi nổi trên báo chí, ông bằng lòng bãi án để CBS xin lỗii.

 

Tướng Westmorteland qua đời vào ngày Thu Hai (18/7/05) vì bệnh già tại viện dưởng lão ở Charleston, South Carolina, hưởng thọ 91 tuổi. Con trai ông cho biết ông sẽ được chôn cất tại West Point theo ý muốn của ông./.

Gen. William Westmoreland, one of America's most decorated and most controversial soldiers, has died.

The retired general held the distinction of commanding every unit in the American army from platoon to chief of staff.

Westmoreland graduated from West Point in 1936, just before the start of the Second World War. During the war he commanded artillery battalions in Sicily and North Africa.

But it was more than 20 years after the end of the war in Europe that Westmoreland came to prominence in the U.S.

In 1964, he was a three-star general commanding American troops in Vietnam, the longest and most divisive war the U.S. ever fought.

He later was named army chief of staff and served in that role until his retirement from active duty in 1972.

Westmoreland always contended the U.S. did not lose the war in Vietnam. "It's more accurate to say our country did not fulfill its commitment to South Vietnam," he said. "By virtue of Vietnam, the U.S. held the line for 10 years and stopped the dominoes from falling."

In 1965, Time magazine named him its Man of the Year.

Although controversial, it was Westmoreland who led a march of veterans in 1982 in Washington for the dedication of the Vietnam Memorial, something he called the "proudest" moment of his long military career.

In 1982 CBS's 60 Minutes accused Westmoreland of deliberately underestimating North Vietnamese troop strength. Westmoreland sued for libel, but after a highly publicized 18-week trial, he settled for an apology.

He also made an attempt at running for public office, trying unsuccessfully for the Republican nomination for South Carolina governor in 1974.

Westmoreland was 91 when he died of natural causes at a nursing home in Charleston, South Carolina, on Monday.

He will be buried in West Point, as he wished, his son said.
