Mr. Nguyen Khac Toan was accused of espionage crimes, violation of criminal codes, article 80 of Socialist Republic of Viet Nam. <li>Mr. Nguyen Khac Toan was arrested on January 8, 2002 in Ha Noi. Mr. Toan, 47 years old, was an ex-soldier of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. His arrest was due to his support and involvement in various democratic activities including assisting the farmers protest in November 2001. <li>Lawyer Tran Lam will represent Mr. Toan. In addition, Mr. Nguyen Khac Toan has requested other lawyers who previously defended for Dr. Ha Sy Phu to join in to speak in his defense. The Ha Noi government accused him of espionage crimes for storing and distributing information to the out side forces which the authorities considered as violation of Viet Nam's Criminal Codes, article 80. <p>Despite the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam's Constitution, article 131 clearly states: "The People's Court will conduct trial in public", Mr. Nguyen Khac Toan's trial was conducted in a closed-doors.
