Buddhist Monk Dies During Self-Immolation
A Vietnamese Buddhist monk died after setting himself on fire Wednesday at an altar outside his temple.
Temple members believe Thich Chan Hy, 74, took his own life to protest the persecution of Vietnamese Buddhists.
Thich, who lived at the Lien Hoa Temple for more than 10 years, left a note. Translated from the Vietnamese by his followers, it said: "I wish that all Vietnamese living in Vietnam and abroad can practice religious freedom. I wish that all Vietnamese will be entitled to human rights and protected by a democratic state."
Self-immolation is a traditional Vietnamese form of protest that gained international attention in 1963, when a famous photograph was taken of a Buddhist monk setting himself on fire in what was then Saigon.
Spokesmen for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department did not immediately return calls seeking comment. A captain overseeing operations Wednesday night had no information about the incident.

Vietnamese monk immolates himself in N Carolina
AFP [ FRIDAY, DECEMBER 26, 2003 09:51:12 AM ]
WASHINGTON : A Vietnamese monk self-immolated at a Buddhist temple on Christmas Eve after dousing himself with petrol, followers at the Lien Hoa temple in Charlotte , North Carolina said.
Thich Chan Hy, 74, died in front of a white 4.6 metre Buddhist statue after setting himself alight early Wednesday morning, in a form of protest that first gained worldwide attention during the Vietnam War.
A man sleeping in a house close to the temple prayer hall felt a current of air around 5.30 am (1600 IST) Wednesday and went to investigate. He saw flames but did not realize Thich Chan Hy, one of the temple's spiritual advisers, was in the middle of the blaze.
Police are investigating the monk's death as a suicide.
Members of the temple, located off The Plaza in an eastern district of Charlotte, said suicide was not compatible with non-violent Buddhist teachings. Another spiritual leader at the temple said rather than suicide, the monk had self-immolated "for a cause".
A message from Thich Chan Hy was later found inside a small plastic bag on a table, containing keys and a paper scroll noting the monk's last three wishes: freedom of religion in Vietnam and the world, human rights for all Vietnamese people, and for his country to retain its land rights in a dispute with China, according to a temple-goer who was present when the scroll was read.
